Pizza Hut’s LeadHerShip initiative inspires change for young women in SA

Celebrating International Women’s Day, Pizza Hut’s LeadHerShip initiative hosted an impactful session on mentorship and growth mindset, fostering opportunities for young women seeking employment in South Africa.
In a notable commitment to driving change for young women in South Africa, Pizza Hut’s LeadHerShip initiative recently held an inspiring EmpowerHer session for its latest cohort of participants, cohort three.
The event, which took place at Pizza Hut’s head office on March 12, focused on cultivating a growth mindset and the power of mentorship, underscoring the challenges that many young job seekers face, particularly the daunting barrier of: I can’t get a job without experience, and I can’t get experience without a job.
In partnership with the Youth Employment Service (Yes), the LeadHerShip initiative addresses this essential challenge by providing young women with quality work experiences in non-profit organisations, alongside skills development and monthly salaries.
Around fifty women from cohort three attended the session, where discussions revolved around embracing a growth mindset and the importance of continuous adaptation.
Pizza Hut Turkey, Africa, & Germany head of brand marketing Rirhandzu Manganye said: “By embracing challenges and learning from failure, LeadHerShip participants are empowered to take control of their futures.”
Yes chief commercial officer Leanne Emery-Hunter shared her insights on cultivating a growth mindset. Highlighting the essential nature of continuous learning, she said: “Sometimes, a delay in your journey is not a denial of your dreams.” She spoke of Yes’s role in creating over 178 000 quality work experience opportunities for young South Africans.
Three inspiring young women joined the panel, showcasing the transformative impact of the programme through their personal experiences.
Zandisile Goeieman, a LeadHerShip alumna, shared how the programme helped her thrive, and that she is now employed as a creator and videographer at Investec. She stressed the importance of feedback and trying new things. “A growth mindset is about seeking more opportunities,” she said, encouraging others to trust in their ability to evolve.
Tshegofatso Phungwayo, a 23-year-old from cohort three, shared her journey from unemployment to securing a marketing internship at Pizza Hut. She credited her success to hard work and mentorship, confirming: “It does work. You just need to keep pushing.”
Olerato Mtshweni, a 25-year-old media content creator, spoke about empathy, and staying true to oneself. “Everyone faces challenges, and understanding where someone comes from can offer valuable perspective. Stay true to yourself and do your best,” she said.
The event also featured a mentoring component, with LeadHerShip participants from cohort three being paired with experienced mentors from Pizza Hut South Africa’s regional office.
Hosted by Nadine EI-Hadad, chief people and culture officer at Pizza Hut Global Franchise Market, and HR lead for Africa and Europe Terikha Nagin, both underscored the initiative’s importance. “LeadHerShip is about building a supportive community and fostering professional growth. Mentorship empowers young women to achieve their full potential.”
